MIAMI

Taste of Asturias

If the man in the photo above was in Asturias, Spain, the floor beneath him would be covered in sawdust. At traditional cider-pouring bars, the sawdust absorbs the spills from the escarciador (cider pourer) as he pours the sidra with a raised arm. This is to “break” or aerate the cider.

Ernesto Llerandi (the cider pourer) and Isabel Miranda are featuring the food and drink of their native Asturias at their restaurant/deli/store this weekend. Enjoy some heady cabrales cheese, fabes con almejas (a stew of large white beans and clams), wild mushrooms, organic artesanal jams, hake and other seafood from the Cantabric sea, lots of sweets and sidra all weekend at Delicias de España during the “Taste of Asturias”. There will be ongoing tastings and demonstrations.

Where: Delicias de España 4016 SW 57th. Ave. Miami

When: October 10-14, 7 am to 10 pm Thursday-Saturday, 7 am to 4 pm Sunday

Your caffeine addiction just got a little help

My mom is a little biased, but she claims that Venezuelan chocolate is the finest in the world. You need to make your own informed choice. Chuao Chocolatier can help you out with that. The San Diego-based business uses Venezuelan cacao and other natural ingredients to make their chocolates. Their new Miracle Mile store has a tasting room and a boutique. Savor or inhale chocolate dipped oranges and ginger, wine and chocolate pairings, hot chocolate, bars, truffles and (Weight Watchers rejoice!) the famed “ChocoPods.” As if all that cacao wasn’t potent enough, ChocoPods are meant to be paired with coffee. As Christopher Walken would say: “Wow.”

Where: Chuao Chocolatier, 70 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables

When: Life’s got you down.

Miami Spice continues

North One 10, Social Miami, China Grill, Tuscan Steak, and Vix are all continuing their Miami Spice lunch and dinner specials through November. Remember, Miami Spice prices are usually offered on weekdays only. North One 10 changes its Miami Spice menu several times a week.

North One 10 special events

North One 10 is offering theme night dinners throughout the fall, including Sunday Spice and Tuesday Lady Spice (complimentary wine on both nights with Spice menus) and a James Bond/From Russia With Love theme dinner (Grilled Octopussy Skewer anyone?).

Where: North One 10, 11052 Biscayne Blvd, North Miami

When: Check their website or call 305-893-4211 for details.

Eleanor Hoh woks it at Dragon Boat Festival

Eleanor Hoh will give a cooking demonstration at the Dragon Boat Festival on Haulover Beach. Paula of mangoandlime praised Eleanor’s down-to-earth teaching style after Paula attended a “Wok Star” class. Festival admission is free, but parking is $5.

Where: Under the big tent at the Dragon Boat Festival, Haulover Beach Park Marina, 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach,
When: Sunday, October 14 between 2 pm and 3 pm.

Alice Waters to appear in November

The word is Alice Waters will appear at Books and Books for a reading from The Art of Simple Food. Set that PDA for November 13 at 8 pm. She will also be appearing in related events around town.

Dine Out Lauderdale continues

Weeknight dining specials continue through November 15 at various Fort Lauderdale restaurants. Enjoy three course meals for $35 at restaurants like Mark’s Las Olas, Himmarshee Bar & Grille, and Café Maxx. The Mai-Kai’s deal is particularly appealing, as it includes the Mai-Kai Islander show. The Polynesian fusion menu is not exceptional but the intoxicating tiki ambience and those ephemerally described rum drinks make it all worthwhile. See the Dine Out website for more info.

PALM BEACH

Publix GreenWise Market now open

The Publix GreenWise Market is now open in Palm Beach. There’s lots of “buy one get one free” going on this week to celebrate the grand opening. The GreenWise Market wins the “things you never even knew you wanted” award for this week — you can age your gruyere in their “cheese cave.” They offer a full service bakery, a giant prepared foods section, curbside service, and a coffee/smoothie café with free wi-fi.

Where: Legacy Place shopping center, 11231 Legacy Avenue, Palm Beach Gardens 33410

When: 7am – 10pm daily
