This is the first of a new Miami Dish column, which I’ve been chomping at the bit to start since the first days of the blog. “Man on the Street” brings you the dish on tasty, low budget lunch options from the men and women who work hard for the money. Back away from the desk. Steer that company van over to these worthwhile recommendations.
February’s Man on the Street is Danny Gonzalez of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, in the Jackson Medical Complex downtown. On the clock, you can find Danny doing experiments, examining neurons, and playing with robots. When he gets a craving, he heads to his local fritanga:
I couldn’t help but notice Pinolandia as I drove home from work everyday. This little Nica fritanga stand, located at 119 NW 12 Avenue, is consistently packed with hungry crowds. I try and drop in for lunch as often as I can. It’s not uncommon to have to wait in a line that wraps around the eatery. I think it’s worth it though. The local favorite is the carne asada completa ($6), which comes with gallo pinto, ensalada, and your choice of plantains or home-made tortilla. I get it every time and it feeds me for at least two full meals. Also, don’t fear the extra-large, specialized “carne cans” that are used to marinate the tasty steaks–they add to the unique flavor!
If you go, you should also check out the little deli area in the back. It is packed with tasty Nica sodas, baked goods, and batidos like horchata (kinda sweet and nutty) and tamarindo. If you do order a batido make sure to specify if you want ice; they charge an extra 75 cents if you choose to take your drink without ice. I love this place and I hope you do too!
