Meet the Purple Pie Company. Alex Van Clief bakes pies “made with hands, not from cans” out of her home kitchen. Why pie? Well, it’s just something she happens to be good at. Van Clief didn’t actually eat too much of her own handiwork until a few months ago, and yet family and friends all clamored for her pies. She started baking when she was in college in Syracuse. One day at college, Van Clief surveyed the buckets of apples she’d gathered after a day trip to the orchard. She knew what had to be done.
The Purple Pie Company deals in apple and blueberry pies, which Van Clief feels are the most beloved. Purple Pie Company will also feature a seasonal pie. Right now, key lime is the selection. A family sized pie costs $14. Van Clief will even “engrave” your pie with a special crust message! She also sells single servings in dainty glass jars (see below) for $4 a “slice.”
And that first pie she ever baked? Van Clief modestly reports that “it was received well.” You too can receive some pie at the “Eight by Eight” group art show at Pink Ghost. You can savor free samples, listen to music, and test your limits at a pie-eating contest. The show starts at 7 pm and it’s free!
