Walls Old-Fashioned Ice Cream is my current go-to place for chocolate milkshakes. Disarmingly polite young people serve generous cups of the homemade chocolate goodness. My current favorite treat from Walls is their chocolate peanut butter fudge. The dense bar of fudge has a satisfying heft to it, and it has just the right amount of give when my teeth sink into it. Granted it’s difficult to fudge up fudge and the flavor combination is no gastronomic discovery. However, the whole experience of the place makes it all the more satisfying.
There’s a quality of timelessness at Wall’s. This is a carefully constructed image of course, but it works. When I enter Walls, I feel like I just walked into the soda shop in an Archie comic.
This is particularly so on weekends when the place is elbow deep in UM students. On Saturday nights, they used to have live music. Walls currently features an “oldies concert reinforced with modern technology.” This is all the more endearing when you realize it’s a DJ playing oldies to the folks singing along under the red and white striped umbrellas.
One more thing about fudge: if your power goes out, you don’t have to worry about it melting.
