Rosa Mexicano continues their year-long “Flavors of Mexico” special menu series. They are currently offering a special menu as part of their “chocolate adventure”. This menu is for the hardcore chocolate fan who wants to explore both the sweet and savory aspects of cacao. I’m excited to try the guisado de pato, a roasted duck breast served with apple and sweet potato pancake, braised cabbage and achiote chocolate sauce. Sounds like autumn on a plate!

The chocolate menu runs through October 5. You can order special items separately or as part of a multi-course Chocolate Tasting menu for $65. If you print out the flyer above, you can get 15% off the multi-course meal.

I am particularly intrigued by the chocolate cooking demonstration.  Executive chef David Sloane will demonstrate dishes while the spectators snack on breakfast bites and coffee. When he is finished with the demonstration, class members will lunch on the same dishes prepared in class. You have to register for the class and it costs $35.

I dined at Rosa Mexicano during their Ice Cream Festival this summer and I was pleased. I was more impressed with their seasonal ice cream menu offerings than I was with the regular menu. I feel that the guacamole made tableside in the molcajete is not worth the weighty $12 price. For that money, I expect to be blown away by guacamole. The mole de xico tamale was tasty, but not memorable.

Rosa Mexicano Cucumber and Shrimp Soup with Beet Sorbet

However, the chilled cucumber soup with shrimp was refreshing. The accompanying beet sorbet was tart and sweet. I was also pleased with the unique flavors of the dessert ice cream trio—well two of the flavors. The tascalate and chocolate oaxaqueno were rich and surprising; I loved the slight salty taste of the former. The salted butter avocado ice cream was jarring—there was not even a lilting sweetness to it. It was just salty!

Rosa Mexicano Ice Cream Festival

Overall, it’s good food and I like that the multi-city Rosa Mexicano tries to stretch what the average American consumer is used to at a Mexican restaurant. Chef Susana Trilling, who lives in Oaxaca, consults with the restaurant regarding their menu.  However, items on the the regular menu may be too pricy for what they are. I would definitely go back to try it again during one of their “Flavors of Mexico” events. Rosa Mexicano seems to take extra care to make these dishes spectacular.
