I’m excited to be participating as a judge in this year’s Fairchild Challenge. The Fairchild Challenge is a showcase for the research projects of students of all ages, but this Saturday is the showcase for high school students. I will be one of the judges in the Green Cuisine contest.
High school students have to take one fast-food menu item, analyze the impact of this food choice on other countries and cultures (nutritional, environmental, agricultural, etc), and then reinvent the dish as a low-impact vegetarian main course. The students will be presenting their dishes and recipes Saturday.
The event is open to the public, and there will be lots of interesting things to see and talk about. You can also bring your old electronics to be recycled. Why not visit the Garden this Saturday? On top of the usual array of eye-catching plants, you’ll also get to see students doing some amazing things.
When: Saturday, April 18, 2009. The event is from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, but the Garden is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Where: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables
How much: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children. Fairchild Challenge participants and their families get in free.

I was a judge as well and I had a great experience tasting the food prepared by all of the challengers. I loved the greens from Booker T, the meatless meatballs from Pembroke Pines and the lovely Quinoa from Carollton Sacred Heart. I was impressed with the creativity of the various schools…some like Miami central even described a new ingredient made from sweet potato.
