Taste of the Nation Miami is Thursday, July 7 at the Fairmont at Turnberry Isle. Restaurants providing tastings include Bourbon Steak, The Forge, Joe’s Stone Crab, Mercadito, Michy’s and Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill, as well as the new City Hall. Click here to see the full list of restaurants.
You might remember me posting about my participation in The Great American Bake Sale in May. The South Florida Bake Sale (organized by RJ Flamingo) raised more than $1500 towards Share Our Strength’s efforts to end child hunger. This event raises money for the same cause.
You might also remember this video, which I’m posting again, because it’s so compelling. It’s about kids going hungry in Orlando:
I got a media (free) ticket to attend last year’s event in Miami, but perhaps you’ll humor me while I explain why I think this event is worth attending if you have some money left in your budget for charity. Besides going for a great cause, you can try many options from sought-after restaurants. Compared to other food festival/tasting events I’ve attended in Miami, I didn’t wait long to get a sample or a drink at most tables. I also felt like the event was less crowded than other tasting events I’d attended. I’m not sure if that was a factor of the recession or because Share our Strength controls their ticket sales better.
If you want to help out, but just can’t swing the ticket price, you might consider volunteering at the event. A friend tipped me off to this, which allowed me to sample the Taste of the Nation Chicago event last summer. In exchange for volunteering, we got an hour or so of time to sample the food at the event. We were able to choose whether we sampled food at the beginning or the end of the event.
I also noticed that Short Order is offering a pair of free tickets to the event, but you have to hurry up and post a comment to their Taste of the Nation status update on Facebook. Do it by this (Tuesday) morning, as they are picking a random winner today.
Update: I was curious about what happens to all of the leftover food. Rachel Pinzur, the PR Director at Fairmont Turnberry Isle, told me that all leftover food is donated to Feeding South Florida (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank).
